last day of February 2012

Again we have a last day of February, my gosh, the time goes so fast!
Today a trip to the Quetzal trail...a lot of wind and clouds. First I gave the option to see some birds on another good bird spot...in the hope that we get better weather on the trail later.
Turned out good , we even got sun  and when we left around 2 pm, it started to get dark  again, so that was great.
We did see a great display of two Three wattled Bellbirds, sitting next to each other and were making an impression  to us , to each other  and to probably a female close by.

I think I saw a female flying in the forest nearby those two machos...the movie that I did make is a kind of blurry, but you will get an idea... http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=242933452464044
Terry the birder(the other Terry) thought he did see a black and yellow Tanager. Unfortunately he did see the bird alone, the ID was very clear for him, we were on that moment on the Quetzal trail on a level of 1800 M...forest edge...so he was not really where he should be according the books...but well, sometimes we do have nice surprises.

On the farm... what happend this week

The clay colored Thrushes are starting to sing...
It is  dry on the farm and so the Palm Tanagers  did show up, always in this time of year...

A couple of Elegant Euphonia's are making a nest.
The common Potoo is singing in the night.
A young of the road side Hawk is all the time in the meadow, get fed by parent.
The whole day I see mixed flocks of different Warblers .
A nice boat billed Flycatcher is in the garden and meadow.
Guest did see with their flash light a nice Mottled Owl...other guest they saw a Resplendent Quetzal...?
I had to tell them that it was a blue crowned Motmot, ah well , they were happy to see him too.
Philadelphia Vireo's and Tennessee Warblers take showers in the sprinklers...need to take a picture when I have the chance.
Since 1.5 week the yellow green Vireo's started to make noise....and so the summer is in full swing.

busy times

The last week was very busy, a lot of "new" bird watchers... and quit a bit of birds.
Exept on  the way to Bocas with two birders, we did leave very early from Boquete , but still not really a lot of birds.

I saw a lifer (unfortunately the birders with me ..did not see them) Saw them (two) very good. I had long time the chance to see them working on the leaves.
Nashville Warblers!!  And I had my camera in the car ......

Also nice, after passing the continental divide a mixed group with silver throated Tanagers and Emerald Tanagers..great view. On the continental divide not so birdie. When I came back in the afternoon , I did go to the same spot and still(around 5pm) not so birdie. I saw 3 birds flying in a brush and for a half hour I saw dark wings going up and down , but I could not see them...Thrush liky...man what a frustraton..I took a picture of the brush....
Enough flowers, but not so much Hummers

But there is always a nice tree to watch with Montezuma Oropendulas, busy building nests
I think the weather was too good on the continental divide, blue skies!! The birds were fast silent.

Another morning with very enthoussiastic new birdwatchers

I think the world has two new birdwatchers since today..they were already birdwatchers, only they discovered it today, how fun!
We did go to 3 different spots, higher in the mountains(spot 2) it was rainy, but that started after we saw two american dippers in love and a couple of Quetzales and a nice white throated mountain Gem and a Scintillant Hummingbird and a yellow winged Vireo. Before I showed how does a Quetzal lookalike...because they expected a small bird what is very special to see.
They know now that it is a little bit bigger bird.
