spring feeling in Boquete, Panama

Well love is in the air...spring is in the air.
The wind did change and we get some clouds above the farm in the afternoon...no rain yet, but it feels good.
Also for the clay colored Thrushes and white throated Thrushes, they did start with singing around a week ago.
In Panama there is no spring...but it feels a little bit like spring.
Here they call it almost winter... mmm hard to feel winter  for a Dutch girl like me...even after almost 19 years  living here.
So I have my spring  here in Panama, what people say here either way. Also I keep an eye  on the Spring in Holland, by checking out the Dutch birds...
 http://www.beleefdelente.nl/
This morning Hans and I were drinking coffee on the balcony and there they were..two violaceous (Gartered) Trogons Male and female, totally in love. I took a picture ..finally... of course it is a typical "me" picture...the male has his head behind branches ....( also a small movie of them.. https://www.facebook.com/tinamoucottage/?fref=ts )
And then I took a picture of the singing female elegant Euphonia...
Birds and coffee...good combination!!!

checking out finca Potoo

Today I took a morning off and so I decided to check our other farm in the area Estrella .
Some places windy (what a noise) some places more quiet...some berrie trees... almost dry river..but with a northern Waterthrush and birds in the berrie tree above me.( list down below) Good idea to eat an apple...and wait.

After that into the forest area...the spring ( ojo de aqua)  is still nice and give enough water. Nice rocks around...did see a cool Coral snake.Too fast for a picture.
Time for a cracker and water and just sit still and checking the area.
There I did see the common Pauraque...
I thought.. I take a picture, very hard with the wind ( moving leaves)...but NO he is on it!!!

New energy after this morning to go on with the coming busy days/ weeks.

I am SO looking forward to the wet season, to the first showers...mmmm, the clay colored Thrushes started to sing already and the yellow green Vireo's are very busy, couple of weeks to go with the sprinklers.

7th of February 2016... the bird tree

Today full house in the Tinamou cottage but also a more quiet day for me... and so  early in the morning to the other part of the coffee farm , little bit down hill.On that part of the coffee farm we did decide in November to quit with the coffee . There are some coffee trees still producing , but we do need to replace trees. We decided to make trails and let the brush grow...
I love it more now...more birds, more insects ...rabbits and I am sure other critters...
Until now a few guest birdwatchers did visit that area and the last guest did say, you have a bird paradise there. I am soooo agree with that.
And so I was standing this morning in front of my favorite tree. She has a lot of different  epiphytes  growing in her and there are berries, insects, dead branches, fluffy flowers ...in it..so a lot of birds...I did stand there for more then an hour... loved it! My dogs are use to it...

adventure of a female magenta throated Woodstar 5th of February 2016... 6th of February Quetzales in love

I was cleaning my house and balcony and I noticed already that a magenta throated Woodstar , female was collecting nest material .
She flew after collecting everytime high into a big tree, so somewhere there she is making a nest.
Wauw , what a energy she had. She was not happy with me cleaning the windows, that was her nest material.
Hummingbirds use the spiderweb as a glue to make the nest sturdy.
So she was trying to make me afraid for her.. well I did stop with cleaning... she was buzzing around me and she was in my face
No respect for me...but respect for  a rufous tailed Hummingbird, snowy bellied Hummingbird and a violet Sabrewing..they all were upset by her and chased her away.
But then she was trying to chase away a road side Hawk who was landing in  "her" tree.Hormones do funny things with birds(and humans :) ).

I did go inside our house and OH NOOO she went after me!!
Of course like a lot of Hummingbirds do, she could not find the door to go out anymore.
In more or less 5 minutes she was tired and I picked her up...took (very fast) a picture and brought her outside, she flew away. Half an hour later she was busy with the spider webs again...
Did find this link, pfff...I did good ...    https://www.audubon.org/news/jon-hamm-rescues-small-birds-and-you-can-too

And so today  6th of February 2016 two brand new bird watchers..(never went birdwatching in their lifes) did go with me. We had a lot of fun. We had 5 male and 1 female Quetzal in love...and nice other birds...see down below. Great morning.
Could not resist to take a picture of one male Quetzal.

what happened the last 2 weeks

No time to update my blog, it is such a busy time.
Did go out birding quit a bit.
What a warm weather , what a sun!!! I did miss a lot of times the nice clouds...
People who visit Panama are really pleased with the weather...of course as a birder..I love to have the clouds... better to watch the birds..and easier to spot them.
But still of course I did see birds..I was all over the province Chiriqui and Bocas del Toro.
And of course working myself crazy at home and farm ...to keep everybody happy there as well the guests, us and the plants (a lot of watering of the plants) and animals.(of course together with husband Hans)

Let's start with the Quetzales, the time to see the Quetzales is arrived..a lot of fruit is ready for them and they are pretty active. Not birder guests and birder guests did see them mostly on  the Pipeline trail (or hidden Waterfall trail) is a safe trail that I recommend to go.I need to go there ...it's been ages that I did go there. Maybe in April..after the high season.
On the Quetzal trail we do start to see the Quetzales now also.
Also the three wattled Bellbirds did arrive.
O.K. here a male and female Quetzal 2016 , I did see them in another area ....:

Also the other Trogons are pretty active now...these Female and male orange bellied Trogon were very easy to spot...

On our farm the Violaceous Trogons are very loud en active and I cross fingers that they are going to nest on our farm. Tinamou cottage guests were very exited to see them in front of their balcony.(female and male)
So that was the story about the Trogons.

The tropical screech Owls are pretty active...last week there was I think an intruder, because it was a big issue between 3 Owls..in front of my face. I was sitting on the balcony of the Great Tinamou cottage, just waiting for arriving guests and there they were... flying around(full moon!) fantastic.
The guests did arrive half an hour later , bummer , no Owls to see anymore.
This morning I did see 1 Owl flying over the trail, while I was taking care of breakfasts and 1 I did hear.
So back to 2 Owls..peace and love :)

A couple of days I did go to the continental divide, every time a great time...
Different birds...different challenges. More to come soon.Impression...
long tailed Tyrant (love them! calling)..above
                                                double toothed Kite:

love this picture of a mantled Howler Monkey..with baby:
                                                  a need Spider:

I do need to take more pictures...but...no time..too much going on.
My ears and eyes are on high alert...pictures are for me secondary.

Very nice sighting on those days on the divide on Barred Hawks.
One day 3 Hawks were fighting in the blue sky and another day..one Hawk did have a prey and everytime he let the prey fall down and grapped it again..spectaculair!!!
I could have taken a picture, I did not ... wanted to see the whole thing. Yes I do regret it a bit.
The birders who were with me, they did take beautiful pictures.
http://ebird.org/ebird/subnational1/PA-NB?yr=all&m=&rank=mrec for the lists of the divide

(Ngäbe-Buglé)

What was a special sight for me ...3 Mourning Doves on 2450 meters altitude (bajo grande):
Never did see them there...
And of course who can resist to  take a picture of this sleepy Volcano Hummingbird (end of the sendero los Quetzales 2500 meters):

Well let's see what is coming on my path the next coming weeks.....

Here the list of my hour birding on our farm this morning...
