Hello everybody, yes before we have the weekend in quarantaine I did go to the cloud forest to check out the birds there. I did do a lot of birdwatching this week, checking out what happens with the migrants. Two days ago it was really nice on our farm, a lot of migrants... the winners were blackburnian Warblers. Today I did see only one male  and next to that a black and white Warbler and three western/eastern Wood Pewees and northern Waterthrushand more of "our" birds. I was happy this week to see migrant Warblers, so much bad news about migrant birds in the news... I will keep my eyes and ears open.

Today it was beautiful sunny weather in the morning and pretty "cold" the first hour, I started later, because birds are always later active higher up in the mountains. Started around 8.30am.

In the beginning of the trail there were two man, one police and one from the "Miambiente" (environment ministry) I did read two days ago in the newspaper that the national parks get more protection, by putting more police to guard..to avoid that people are going to do hunting, cutting trees away...that kind of things. So we did talk  and they were both  my kind of man, totally in the nature..enthusiastic and also frustrated by what they experience. But I said to them, you can do something about it for real... we did talk about bird /nature protection, growing coffee on high altitudes(a hype now...also because of the climate change and money). And illegal dumping chemicals into rivers, what was in the news yesterday in an area nearby Cerro Punta. They told me that they were going into the area to check what is happening... they did have a tip that there was illegal cutting of trees in Parque La Amistad, so they were on a mission and they are coming back in 2,5 days. Later I was on the trail and they passed me...  with another man from Miambiente and 5 Policeman.

My morning was already a success after this good conversation!!! I must say that Panama is really busy to protect the areas, it always can better of course, always there are "bad people". Anyway, as usual I did not walk a lot, did watch for half an hour two green fronted Lancebill Hummingbirds going with the large bills into flowers.

It was a good morning!

a release of a female resplendent Quetzal ( in English and Español )

 

Hello everyone, finally another post .. despite the virus and quarantine I am quite busy with everything. Our life looks different, we suddenly have more time to maintain our own home and garden. I often sit on the terrace and watch the birds or walk in the farm here. Once a week I go to another quiet "no people" area where I enjoy the birds for a while. Shopping as little as possible and very early in the morning. This is how we pass the time ...

Last Tuesday (8 Sept 2020) I received a message from Rosie who takes care of birds and has an official permit from "Miambiente", Ministry of Environment. People from the ministry had brought a Quetzal (female) to her that Friday (Sept. 4). She had been dumped in the Volcan area. People had probably taken her out of the nest and cut her wings. Probably dumped ... now my interpretation ... because it is a protected bird species and is punishable anyway !!!!! what they did ... whether it turned out to be a female and well they are of course less beautiful than the male ... in any case ... a very wrong situation.

 Rosie has so far rescued Toucans and parrots and Howler Monkeys ... and returned many to nature. But never a Quetzal of course. Quetzales need special food

... they mainly eat wild avocados and other fruits of the Laurel family. For the first time in ages, I went to visit to check the situation. Keeping our distance and wearing a mask, we looked at a bird that was reasonably well feathered, she could fly and she ate by herself ... but in a cage at 600 m altitude in the heat,

she would not last long ... release as soon as possible! luckily we agreed there. I had an idea where there was fruit and went to investigate. Found a place. Unfortunately was the release not the next day, because people from "Miambiente" had to come along and  also give permission.(which is super good!) That permission was there. And this morning (Thursday) the time had come. In the morning that day before, I also went to have a look and on both days I did see the fruit and also many birds. .. also orange bellied Trogons ... that also did give me a good feeling. The site is at 1900 m altitude. Rosie and I (both a bit nervous) and Hans had to walk a bit to get to the spot, as quickly as possible. It is a protected forest of friends and we always call it the silent forest. No people, just birds and trees and plants. The Quetzal was getting livelier, it was really moving to see

... yes this was her place! Immediately after the release 

                                          she looked for a safe place and 2 times she flew further away

and at the last place she started to polish her feathers. She had eaten well that morning, so she could let everything come to her just as well. Near her there was an orange bellied Trogon and lots of Mountain Thrushes ... so fruit!

We watched for about 15 minutes and yes fingers crossed ... She sat on the branch like a female Quetzal .. quietly looking around brushing feathers ... who knows what she will do, it will be fine ... hope that the wings will grow fast!

Hola a todos, por fin otro post .. a pesar del virus y la cuarentena estoy bastante ocupado con todo. Nuestra vida se ve diferente, de repente tenemos más tiempo para mantener nuestro propio hogar y jardín. A menudo me siento en la terraza y observo los pájaros o camino por finca aqui. Una vez a la semana voy a otra zona tranquila "sin gente" donde disfruto de las aves durante un rato. Compras lo menos posible y muy temprano en la mañana. Así pasamos el tiempo ...

El Martes pasado (8 de Septiembre de 2020) recibí un mensaje de una señora que cuida de aves y tiene un permiso oficial de "Miambiente", Ministerio de Medio Ambiente. La gente del ministerio le había traído un Quetzal (mujer) ese viernes (4 de septiembre). La habían arrojado al área de Volcan. Probablemente la gente la había sacado del nido y le había cortado las alas. Probablemente tirado ... ahora mi interpretación ... porque es una especie de ave protegida y es punible de todos modos !!!!! lo que hicieron ... si resultó ser una mujer y bueno, por supuesto, son menos hermosos que el hombre ... en cualquier caso ... una situación muy equivocada.

 Rosie hasta ahora ha rescatado Tucanes, Loros y Monos ... y ha devuelto a muchos a la naturaleza. Pero nunca un Quetzal por supuesto. Los Quetzales necesitan alimentos especiales ... principalmente comen aguacates silvestres y otras frutas de la familia Laurel. Por primera vez en mucho tiempo, fui de visita para comprobar la situación. Manteniendo nuestra distancia y con una máscara, miramos a un pájaro que tenía bastante plumas, podía volar y comía sola ... pero en una jaula a 600 m de altitud en el calor, no duraría mucho ... suelte lo antes posible! afortunadamente acordamos allí. Tenía una idea de dónde había fruta y fui a investigar. Encontré un lugar. Lamentablemente la liberación no fue al día siguiente, porque la gente de "Miambiente" tuvo que venir y también dar permiso.(Muy bien!) Ese permiso estaba ahí. Y esta mañana (Jueves) había llegado el momento.  En la mañana del día anterior, también fui a ver y en los dos días vi la fruta y también muchos pájaros. .. también Trogons  ... eso también me dio una buena sensación. El sitio está a 1900 m de altitud. Rosie y yo (ambos un poco nerviosos) y Hans tuvimos que caminar un poco para llegar al lugar lo más rápido posible. Es un bosque protegido de amigos y siempre lo llamamos el bosque silencioso. No hay gente, solo pájaros, árboles y plantas. El Quetzal se estaba volviendo más animado, era realmente conmovedor verlo ... ¡sí, este era su lugar! Inmediatamente después de la liberación buscó un lugar seguro y 2 veces voló más lejos y en el último lugar comenzó a pulir sus plumas. Había comido bien esa mañana, así que podía dejar que todo le viniera bien. Cerca de ella había un trogon de vientre naranja y muchos zorzales ... ¡qué fruta!

Estuvimos mirando durante unos 15 minutos y sí, cruzaron los dedos ... Se sentó en la rama como una hembra de Quetzal ... mirando tranquilamente a su alrededor cepillándose las plumas ... quién sabe qué hará, estará bien ... :)

this morning I did go birdwatching on our other farm(finca Potoo)...
when I was on my way home, I did notice a lot of birds along the road... so 35 minutes later I did go finally in my car and did go home... Army Ants and birds..great combination... I love it!

tropical screech Owl on finca Habbus de Kwie

Hello everybody, good birding times today... suddenly I did see a tropical screech Owl perching...I heard some birds calling, but to be fairly honest I thought that is was because of my dogs...but they were behind me, so then always take the calling serious, so I was checking the forest and yes there he/she was... the "tropical screech Owl"

I must say..I am also proud on this picture that I took from 2 very cute, hungry... just perched red legged Honeycreepers..

black Phoebe just fledged in Boquete Panama

17th of June 2020.. Hans and I did go today for the first time since more than 3 months to the ranger station of the national park volcan Baru ..sendero los Quetzales. Of course the park is still closed, so we did sit on the little bench and did drink coffee. Did see some birds and did enjoy the silence and sun. Then after 20 minutes there was a car and a woman stepped out...so we stepped in the car and drove away. We were not in the mood to sit there and wear mouth protection... So we passed the Caldera river and did watch this cute just fledged black Phoebe, we felt better again and did go to our home on the farm where we did drink coffee ...again.
