and so... September began

Hello everybody, September did start already...oh my gosh time flies. I just had the idea that I said goodbye to the nice migrant birds black striped Warbler and black burnian Warbler and "boom" there they are back ... probably they are still migrating (transient) and going on to the south...

Last week I did go to see shore birds, of course migrants there...
I was hoping for Dickcissels, yes that would be a new bird for me... my husband Hans did say to me that they are not existing 😆 , because I did have "bad" luck with this bird to see him for years and years....
This time ( Wednesday 11th of September) I had a good feeling. Hans and I were surrounded in the late afternoon by rice fields in David and we did see huge groups of small yellowish birds... no way.. Dickcissels!!!

So exciting!

After 15 minutes I was checking out Wilson's Phalaropes...

did hear a big group Dickcissels flying over very close above my head... it looked like they did want to say... yes we do exist!!!!😉

I love the rice fields, specially the sounds of all the peeps, Sandpipers, Yellowlegs, Lapwings and so on... probably also I love that because my "Dutch blood". Of course the Netherlands does have a lot of water/ wetlands and beaches. When I am a little bit homesick... we love to go to that area.

This time of year it is a harder time to ID the shorebirds ...as a matter of fact...it is hard work.

All the different plumages...fortunately this ruddy Turnstone was still in his breeding plumage, easy ID

and then this molting little blue Heron...I can say it is a juvenile..he is almost there....

.....then suddenly in the scope 2 blue winged Teals, always a nice gift...

and a huge amount of black bellied whistling Ducks around us

We did stay in in that area until it was dark, very cool was that in the darkness you hear all the different frogs and do see night Herons flying by...also 1 Owl, but that was too fast for ID , very white...maybe a Barn Owl or Striped Owl... 

Well we have to go back ...soon!!! It was a fun late afternoon and night.

I did go also to that area two days before with Ann  and I will add down below the lists of these two fun outings.

Hello everybody, we were visiting tonight our friends and we did see the striped Owl , very cool.
Next time I will not "zoom" in too much , I was just trying to get him closer...but it was already too dark

Highland Tinamou roosting place

Hans  and I did go this late afternoon to the cloud forest , the planning was to see and hear some Owls and probably there is a Oilbird in that area, because a colleague  birdwatcher (thanks:) ) did give me a tip that they found last weekend feathers of the Oilbird. So up to the cloud forest... unfortunately heavy rain and thunderstorm last hour..so we returned earlier then we thought... but we did see a highland Tinamou roosting and more, so that was nice.

Nephila clavipes golden silk spider alley

Hello everybody, well today 31th of July was my day off and day out, this time with Ann. We decided to go to the peninsula Burica. I was out of my bed at 3.40am...was happy it was 3.40am(yes call me crazy), eat my breakfast. Hans was feeding the animals later that day so I had an easy morning...only drinking coffee and eating my breakfast. Then to Ann, she was driving this time...

Really enjoyed the 2 hour drive, beautiful mist on meadows..did remind me of Autumn in Holland...

Only a little bit more tropical trees:)
We did start with a nice gray necked Hawk , bathing in the sun.

Did like the ladders that they put over the roads for the Monkeys and Sloths crossing the roads

The Howler Monkeys are very happy on the peninsula, so much fruit!

We visited different areas and spots..the seabirds were slow...except the brown Pelicans...

We did walk a trail in the forest later that day, because it was fast very warm and birds are, like us, hiding in brushes. As you see ...there were a lot of silk Spiders on the trail, so much that we took a video to give you an impression .

It's a harmless Spider, but it is kind of spooky to get spiderwebs in your face, with such a big spider in it. The trail was pretty need, beautiful trees and brush and birds. The black bellied Wrens were singing a lot. Chestnut backed Antbirds and black hooded Ant shrikes were singing and pretty active.

We did see a nest, thought it was old, but there was an immature bird(and egg) in it... I wonder if it will survive, the nest was really a bad nest... we were after 4 hours hungry..did wait on a far distance 15 minutes..but  no parents yet..so we don't know what kind of  bird, have to do some research....

 It was a good day...totally different world (and birds) and so close to our farm in Boquete....thats one of the fun parts of living in Panama.

birdwatching and work to do on our farm

Hello all, this week I am checking out our farm...to watch birds and to check what we have to do on the trails/forest . Well I do see some work again...very care full though...because we have still birds who are nesting.
Like this orange billed Nightingale Thrush in the palm tree next to our house:

Took my phone with me on my walks and with the GPS you can get a nice idea how I did walk.(see down below)

 Did not walk the farm (9 hectares)  totally... but these are the walks where our guest also walk and that has to be nice and walkable.

I have to walk 2 other trails and then I know for sure what my work is the coming next days.

The garden is now done...for now..probably with this nice weather ...sun and some rain..everything grows like crazy, so in 2 weeks time I can start over again. Don't mind that... like to work in the garden. 

The trails in the forest... only pruning a bit, some small branches are hanging over. Loads of Acorns on the trail by the way...

  I like the rainy season, everywhere you hear the water going....

And on one of my walks , 7th of July 2019, I did see a new bird for the farm...in the forest... first I did see the juvenile double toothed Kite and yes I did take a picture. Did see this bird before also the parents.

But more or less then 10 minutes later I did see the collared Forest Falcon, an immature!!

Did hear a week ago or so the song of a laughing Falcon...I thought... I remember that I said to Hans,  "he has a different song"...well now I know it was an adult collared Forest Falcon.

 I wonder did they have a nest in the pine trees or so?

Enough to eat for these birds... we have so much birds on the farm and so much immatures.

I will add the lists of my walks and I took the picture of my computer screen of the walk, to give an idea. 

I end my story with this Lesson's Motmot who was warming up in the sun this morning...

His new feathers are coming, he looks already beautiful!

confession of a birdwatcher

It was 31th of January 2018..I was together with a group almost on the top of Volcan Baru. I was checking out a timberline Wren, when the group was with the guide. The Wren was a new bird for me and so I was excited to see him very good.

The group was standing further away and as I did see, they were excited too and checking out brushes and small trees. I did see a lot of birds there, they were hectic and upset... did go the group and did watch all the birds... all kinds of Warblers/Trushes  and later a couple of Timberline Wrens too. I did whisper to my friend, "it looks like there is a bird of prey or some danger for them here" She looked at me and whispered.... "they did play the tape of an Owl"...

Yes I was naief, I know that people use tapes and recordings to attract birds..I did see that a few times from other birdwatchers, without any results and after that I did read about it and decided for myself  not to use this instrument and I am very clear with that to guests, when I am going out guiding.

At this moment I do read a book, almost finished, written by Arjan Dwarshuis, he did set a new world record by observing 6852 bird species in 2016. I did see the movie too and the book is just as good.
In his book he makes people also aware how much nature is disappearing.
He did see very rare birds, also with the help of guides and friends...and tapes, recording.

I am thinking a lot about this book and last week I was on my own birdwatching up in the mountains.
Did hear the scale crested Pygmy Tyrant. I have seen the bird before,  love this bird...it's tiny, cute and his calls and songs are lovely. They can hide very good too, but when you wait and have patience, they pop out of the brush, I did have that several times.

 BUT WHAT WAS I THINKING.... I had time  and patience ...I took my phone and thought...what can it hurt.. maybe he pops out and will stick his cute crest up.

I did play the song of a scale crested pygmy Tyrant. I did wait a bit ...very soon with a guilty feeling.. thinking...Terry why did you do this? I was talking to myself... is it the book?...yes a little bit, he did it too and in some areas like this area, where almost nobody comes..specially not for birdwatching.

Is it curiosity ..no and yes... because I did see the bird before, but maybe he puts his crest up because he will be upset and it is his territory...OH OH NOT GOOD TERRY.

Fortunately nothing happened..the bird was silent  and I did put my phone away.

However 3 minutes later I did hear a strange sound that I never did hear before..looked around and it was above me... an upset scale crested Pygmy Tyrant...with his crest down😏

Yes I took a picture and took a video, because of the sound. He was cleary upset and at least for 20 minutes he did follow me .I don't walk too much, but the steps that I did make ...he was there in my face with his weird sound.

OKE... you did make a point...I will never use tape anymore... little bird... so sorry for the disturbance!!

vacation in the netherlands May 2019

Hello everybody, yes we were for 2 weeks in Holland. Visiting our family and friends and of course did watch birds.
We did have typical Dutch weather...partly clouds, wind ...the rain was not there for the 2 weeks.
Did stay in Schoonhoven, a small typical Dutch town for 2 weeks in a farm house along the dike. We did live before we left for Panama along the dike and we still love it.

Nearby Schoonhoven is a nice small village , the name is Ameide. We did go there a few times because there is a very nice nature reserve "Zouweboezem" where black Terns (zwarte Stern) are nesting. The last couple of years in the Netherlands,  I do see more and more black Terns. They get more protection and more habitats  are created for them. They are migrants from west Africa and come all the way to breed in the Netherlands and of course other European country's

Okay...it does not look very natural...but the black Tern is marked as threatened on the red list of breeding birds in Netherlands, so it's important that they get extra protection.

Also this year I did hear and see more Cetti's Warblers! Sorry no pictures. They are hard to take a picture of..their songs are very beautiful..I will add a taped song later this month. (10th of July 2019... does not work... you can listen to the tape on ebird.)

The amount of Cetti's Warblers are getting more and more because the winters are not so cold anymore in the Netherlands... also in Schoonhoven along the dike we heard and did see this Warbler...

We did visit also the Biesbosch national park but I must say... I did love as a birdwatcher more the Zouweboezem. 

Also there is a colony of purple Herons (purper Reiger), it was a long time ago that I did see this beautiful Heron... Also with these Herons it goes  much better! These are migrants and winters in west Afrika(south of the Sahara)

Next to all our visits to friends and family, we did visit and did do some bird watching all over the Netherlands... I think they have a problem with too much wild pigs in national park the hoge Veluwe, nearby Apeldoorn..everywhere the soil was a mess. Did see some nice birds though, but more in the open area, not in the forest . You can see , it was very dry (for June!)

And of course I try to see a new bird in the Netherlands...it is getting harder and harder...but I did see this European Honey Buzzard (Wespendief) 

We did go to the east of Netherlands (province of Overijssel), that was great, we did not have a lot of time ...but next time we hope to spend more time there. 

In the south of Holland in the garden of friends of us this nice Dunnock ( Heggemus)

First I thought that it was a Flycatcher, because his behaviour was like that.

I never did see that of a Dunnock:

This Song Thrush (Zanglijster) had a good catch for her baby's

Like in Panama, a lot of birds did have nests and immatures...like this white Stork:

Egyptian Goose (Nijlgans), probably nearby nest, they can have nests in old tree holes...

also they use old nest of Herons,Storks and birds of prey and so.

Well this was a small impression..for all my list go to my E-bird. I add 2 lists of this vacation favorite
