Ovenbird story 23th of January 2017

This morning an Ovenbird did hit the window of our house... I was amazed because normally they  "walk" on the ground looking for insects. Was he spooked by something, we do have the whole day the broad winged Hawk around in the coffee farm and meadow. Maybe that was the reason...
This bird is migrating from  eastern USA all the way to Panama to hit himself or herself to a window in Boquete?!
We don't have these accidents a lot in the 19 years that we live in this house .
One time it was a immature thick billed Euphonia and another time a buff throated Saltator and one clay colored Thrush and now this one... poor thing

He/she was sitting like this for at least 2 hours and suddenly (Hans and I were staring at the bird from the living room..) the eyes did go open!!!

Yess...high five!! and the Ovenbird flew, maybe with some headache.
Greetings Terry

bird hike today 22th of January 2017

I was planning to hike to our other farm with our dogs , but I ended up just 3 km's up up the road from  Tinamou cottage. Right away a lot of birds... interesting was around 5 min  (1175m) from our house ( http://coffeeadventures.net/tinamou.html ) I did hear a barred Antshrike and yes I did see her too . I thought I had her complete , but it ended in a bad picture...
Pretty high up for this bird.

Just before that I did see a (singing) rose throated Becard female , not a bird that we see often in our neighbourhood. Of course my pictures were all without a head... how older I get how more I am going to look a like my Mum...she took loads of pictures of people without head. I do it with birds... :)

My dog Spot took of and went home...he is probably getting annoyed by me  standing still all the time. My Max was loyal and behaved himself as a great birding dog.

Around 9 am it started to be warm and I decided not to move on, turned back  and yes it took a while to come back home... some pictures:  black Hawk Eagle, spot crowned Woodcreeper, Tennessee Warbler, long billed Starthroat

And down below the list.... happy Sunday! Greetings Terry

20th 21th of January 2017 some pictures....and a short story

Well the coffee is picked:
Did have couple of bird trips and did make the cottages ready for a new stream of guests. Yesterday we did some shopping in David and on the way back we took a D tour through the mountains. Pretty hot weather, but for us it was a nice break.

Today work to do on the farm and yes did some bird watching and took some pictures
Always in the Summer we get the golden browed Chlorophonia's on the farm, a lot of food for them, like for the others like bay headed Tanagers, silver throated Tanagers, thick billed and yellow crowned Euphonia's...well see down below the list of this morning...
Here  pictures of the golden browed Chlorophonia female :

And I took a video of her... https://youtu.be/ig8TZxj3LEg

Hans took a picture of a red legged Honeycreeper:
Never get "bored" to watch them.
And he took a picture of the blue gray Tanager in the sun and oh boy he is gray!
Such cool birds!
In the meadow I took a picture of the male magenta throated Woodstar, his hormones are very active. Strange enough I did not see a female yet. He is singing a lot on the tip top of thin branches.

This is also the time for nice insects and some annoying ones too....

18th of January 2017, Summer and a pair of Violaceous Trogons (Gartered Trogons)

Yes , this is how the day began on the farm.
I took the morning off and decided to walk on the farm... on the meadow, where this picture was taken and ended in the coffee farm.
Nice flocks and when I was staring at a nice American Redstart (of course my best picture is without the head...)

The Violaceous Trogon (or new name ..Gartered Trogon) male flew buy and landed in front of my nose...
I took a movie

On the video you will see that he start to "sing" because behind me the lady flew in and around.
Directly the male took of and flew very gracious to the tree with the Wasp nest:
In this tree (arrow)
I did check out the tree when they flew off, I cannot see if there is already a nest or a start of making a nest... will keep an eye on it...fingers crossed.
The bird list of this morning... see down below.

11th of January 2016 a nice summer day

I was up early and we were drinking coffee on the balcony before I was going to work with my "to do" list.
Behind us we did hear the northern wind, the garden was silent, the birds not.
Of course binoculars and playing with my camera... red crowned Woodpecker male:

New year 2017

End of December 2016 and beginning of January 2017, nice outings with very nice birdwatchers.
And at home in between all the busy holidays.. picking coffee.
Very difficult when you pick coffee and hear constantly birds above you and around you. Specially when the Northern wind is blowing hard in the mountains, the birds are hiding in our little valley ...out of the wind.
The 1th of January was really nice , when 2 fiery billed Aracari's were flying in the farm and did hang around with me for 20 minutes or so. Of course I did not have my camera with me.

Today (3th of January) I did go to the cloud forest, more or less around 1700 M altitude. The birds were hiding, but some were very nicely in the open. Yes finally I took some pictures... my new plan for 2017, taking more pictures. Whether it will work, we will see. Down below (and one above) some of today and a couple of lists of the new year until now.

Greetings Terry
