Trip 28th of March 2012

Another day with nice birdwatchers...a lot of nesting activity and a nice migration was going on. Yesterday a lot of Baltimore Orioles and again today a bunch of them in the garden...I took this picture....in front of our Balcony...above the Oriole a lesser Goldfinch and down below a red legged Honeycreeper.....

Then the birding trip this morning... we did go to three different spots....
A social Flycatcher was making a nest...recycle nest....

With permission I have two pics of us birders...

Thanks! Chris and Rich

frustration...

Today I did go with 4 bird watchers to the same spots as 3 days ago...
Yesterday we did see a lot of birds with the same group, but today we needed to have a lot of patience.
They did love to see a Quetzal...when we stepped out of the car , we right away heard one. I saw in a flash a big bird flying...pretty sure it was one.
We did see this morning the Toucanet  again feeding the baby's (the baby's make more sounds now), so that was nice.
But the Quetzal  did let us down and also our puber Bell bird, heard him , but did not see him.
I was frustrated...the birders  not so much...did not notice it. They went in the afternoon to the Quetzal trail and did see three wattled Bellbirds there, what was their goal in the afternoon...I am happy that they saw them. They are still in Boquete tomorrow morning , so they go again to the spot.
And then a couple of days Volcan , they will see a Quetzal...I would be surprised when not.
I was home and took the dogs to the same area, did a little hike and I did step out of my car and yes...right away a female and male Quetzal and later all over the place Quetzal sounds and I did spot 2 more males.
The male Quetzal has no tail, we spotted that one 3 days ago....but he has a wife...her picture failed , but I have a picture of our tail less guy.

I came home , ate a sandwich , looked out of the window and saw a group of gray headed Chachalaca's flying by...this one  did land in front of my nose....

some Dutch bird pics

Here are some need Dutch bird pics... taken by my brother in law ...Sjaak van van der Sel (www.sjaakvandersel.nl )
Of course also there bird migration . These pictures  he took on a Dutch  island... Ameland 16th to 21th of March 2012
                                           larus argentatus (Zilvermeeuw)

                                          migration of branta leucopsis (Brandganzen)
So I keep also updated what is happening bird wise in Holland...a good other resource is
www.beleefdelente.nl   a need site of the bird protection organisation in Holland.
Webcams on 11 bird nests in Holland.
It really helps to get people more involved in the bird world.

Bird tripssss

Busy times in bird paradise. Immigration is really going on...sky full of Hawks, loads of Warblers and Vireos in full plumage, the Swainson's Thrushes are everywhere, eating themselves full with berries and of course our"own" birds are maiding , breeding , singing and have nest of baby's.
A lot of Hummingbirds are making the third nest with baby's.
The snowy bellied Hummingbird and the long billed  Starthroat are re using the same nest over and over.
A nice blue throated Toucanet has baby's in  a dead tree trunk, I made a video and a picture.
The video look at... http://www.facebook.com/#!/photo.php?v=256998717724184&set=vb.100002421723341&type=2&theater
And I did see a juvenil male three wattled Bellbird....his voice has a little pinch, look still like a girl, his hormones are crazy and his wattles are short...poor guy. He has a berry tree for himself, that is nice...but he is not in the group.
He is sitting in the center of the picture.
The Hawk migration started around 19th of March and the Swainson's Thrushes they came in a day later in big amounts.
Well I had a bunch of half a day birding trips...here some results, to get an idea....

Hola Terry: Thanks for the bird list and thanks so much for everything else...we had a great time with you. We went back to the last spot visited with you and hiked a big loop through Bajo, Centro and Alto Jaramillo. It was good to go back over the birds we saw with you and get comfortable with knowing them. We saw an additional 30-40 species that day to include good looks at a Bat Falcon.
Today we had an absolutely wonderful day hiking the Pipa del Aquas Trail and up to another cascada (Mystery Falls) and walking to Finca Lerida. On Pipas we saw 4 Quetzals (3 males, 1 female).....with great close up looks at 2 males!!! We also heard 3 others we couldn't see. Also saw a pile of other birds (30-40 species new for the trip). Finca Lerida was beautiful too!!!! Birding in the forest was great, but I also enjoyed birding in the disturbed/agricultural areas, finding a variety of new things. You live in a beautiful part of the world! Thanks so much for sharing some of it with us. Also please say hello to the 4 birders from Minnesota and Canada that are with you. Hope they have a safe trip home. We are off to Bocas tomorrow for another adventure. Best wishes......Tom and Clare

suddenly the weather changed

Thunderstorms last night and a lot of rain!
Grazy and how sad for the bird watchers who went on a trip.
We did escape the rain to go to Caldera, but after 1.5 hours also there it did start with rain.
So we did a half  trip, around 2,5 hours...different spots and some "car birdwatching"
Saw migrating barn Swallows. They were sitting on a electricity line and were enjoying the rain, like a lot of other birds.
Specially in Caldera and on our farm we did not have rain since beginning of January....
Today the river was wild and the sky was clean without dust and it smelled wonderful!
