27 December 2014...rich feeling

I felt this morning very rich...was at my horses and did see the nest of the long billed Starthroat, gives me always a good feeling...now 2 weeks on the nest , so maybe there are little ones already...

Then I was making breakfast and out of my kitchen window I did see a lot of movement...binoculars and yes an Ant swarm...yeah ...a lot of birds...also  a group of 20+ gray headed Chachalaca's..mostly very shy here, specially with all the guests in the cottages... they are alert...but they were going to the creek in front of the little Tinamou cottage ..all of them to drink !! I took my camera...could not take a picture of the creek , but out of my kitchen window I zoomed in these 3 cute Chachalaca's

a lot of Magenta throated Woodstars this season

I notice lately that we see a lot of magenta throated Woodstars this season.. all over the place.
A few year ago I did see the most on our farm and around...but now also higher up even on levels of 1800m, which is possible according the book , but I never did see so many.
Always a pleasure to see them...
Today he was around big time on both spots that we went... 1050 m and 1700 m.

It was a warm morning...on the spots that we did go...we needed spots out of the heavy summer wind and of course no drizzel or real rain , what was happening higher up in the other area's .
Good birds today...
And a nice lizard :
And a group of Coati's in the forest:

little bit time for birding around David....6th of December 2014

This morning up early, Hans and I decided to go early (7am) to David , do some shopping , but first some birdwatching towards the shore (Pacific) .
I did start with a loud laughing Falcon on our farm, had to zoom in big time , pretty good....I think...
So that was a good start...so then up to David and at 7.45am we were surrounded by open fields, rice, sugarcane, Aubergine(Eggplant), Banana trees...
A lot of Flycatchers..I love always to see the fork tailed Flycatchers catching insects:
We did walk a little bit to the river, nice spot..a nice female Amazon Kingfisher was busy with fishing:
Nice was to see the rusty margined Flycatcher, first I thought it was a social Flycatcher...but when I heard the call...I put some more energy in the bird(s), I did see the darker eye stripe and no wingbars at all, cool!My pictures are too dark of him..this one is the best:
Did see a bay Wren along the river, first time for me on the Pacific side...
Later on we did go to the little lake, was nice to see the Anhinga drying his wings.Down below him was a pied billed Grebe swimming and in the long grass a nice red breasted Blackbird
Last time we were on that lake in the evening, as crowded of birds it was then , how silent it was now.
It was cloudy, bit sun..around the 28 degrees C around 9am...time for us "mountain people" to do some shopping and go home... next time we will leave home around 5.30am
But still we did see nice birds and discovered again a very nice birding spot. Cannot wait to go again...!

hawk migration in full swing and the Owls are busy on the farm and more..and a lifer for me!

As we were in Bocas del Toro province the 31th of October 2014, see my blog story before...it was one of the best days to see the migration of the Hawks and Vultures there, I found out...
I did check the site: 1 http://hawkcount.org/day_summary.php?rsite=682&ryear=2014&rmonth=10&rday=31
Always a very nice website.

Also a nice report about the counting in Panama city..
http://www.tvn-2.com/Noticias/Paginas/mas-de-3--millones--de-aves-rapaces-migratorias-pasan-por-panama-.aspx

O.K. here in Boquete I have to wait until March/April to see the hawk migration here... but we have here pretty exciting things going on...
3 days ago we got the winds out of the north and so that means ...Summer is starting.
And the birds know...More different Hummingbirds on the farm, today I did see the green violet Ear already on the farm...always a "Summer sign", they stay here for 3 months and then they migrate higher up in the mountains ...
And a big fight between the rufous tailed Hummingbird, snowy bellied Hummingbirds and the Magenta throated Hummingbirds.(small movie on the Tinamou cottage facebook... https://www.facebook.com/tinamoucottage  )
Since a week the males magenta throated Hummingbirds are singing on the top of the trees in the more open area.
The red legged Honeycreepers are getting more red legs and the immatures are changing their feathers, this picture from our balcony

Nice this morning was the sound in our forest of the Mottled Owl and the tropical screech Owl.
Yesterday evening I did see the common Potoo flying over(full moon)

And this morning I did see after two days of gray weather ... so much birds on the meadow part of the farm...lot of migrants..black and white Warblers, Wilson's Warblers, golden winged Warbler, chestnut sided Warbler, Tennessee Warbler, blackburnian Warbler, American Redstarts, Summer Tanagers,Baltimore Orioles, rose breasted Grosbeak.(not one Philadelphia Vireo yet)
I thought this tropical Kingbird was sitting so nice in the sun:

And so late in the afternoon we did go to the city David , do some shopping..had some time left before dawn... so we went to the small lake  area to watch the birds..., only an hour...but what a spot!
I love this kind of late afternoon weathers..this nice Anhinga is enjoying the nice weather too...:

                                                         Nice Green Heron...:

and a green Kingfisher...:

And  for me a long time ago that I did see a Mourning Dove:

Big group of Mealy Parrots were fouraging.
Big groups ruddy breasted Seedeaters, nice.
And a lifer for me..western Kingbird..very good view and the call has a higher pinch then the tropical Kingbird..cool!!!
Next time we have to go back and stay longer there.

A day out and some birding in Bocas del Toro province...lifer.. 31th of October 2014

The 31th of October we always go out for a day, together... Hans and I were that day 38 years together. Hans is very patient with me... he is not a birder, but can sit and wait and enjoy birds and nature while he has coffee in his hand...you understand ..I did bring a lot of coffee...

We did go a day driving around in the Bocas del Toro province. Did find a nice new birdspot and did have a lifer there...... a pied Puffbird! It is always fun to go to the (mainland) Bocas del Toro province. I don't have the picture of the Puffbird..I thought I had one , but it is all leaves... but I took this nice little blue Heron nearby the Puffbird spot. Yes I do see them also in Boquete, but nice to see him on the Caribbean side
My new bird spot nearby Chiriqui grande

It is nice to see some shore/river  and other caribbean species of birds and trees and animals.
We did see 2 Otters (neotropical) fishing when it was almost dark on the way back home.( Pacific side) The Otters were in the circle on the picture.. hard to see on the picture. Across a tree with Cattle Egrets.

And of course still a huge Hawk /Vulture migration is going on, even more then when we were in Panama city.. mostly Swainson's Hawks and mostly Turkey Vultures, I did see 2 northern Harriers.
this pictures were taken in Chiriqui grande

( an addicion.. 2th of November ... 2,105,060 migratory raptors above Panama city and surrounding areas. .a record. In 10 years is not counted such a large number.)

Later on ..around the continental divide I did see a broad winged Hawk (he decided to stay for the Summer) and today (1th of Nov) in the cloudforest I did see another broad winged Hawk.
This picture was taken in Miramar. (Bocas del Toro)
