watching birds on 600 meter and the first migrant on the farm (29th of August)...black and white Warbler

I decided to go to Caldera area (600 m) today,  was too lazy and I left the house 7.30, that was not the plan , at least you have to go at 6.30 am ..because around 9 am it will get warmer and the birds will be slower.
Did go to several spots, road , river area , did find a nice trail along a river.. :
I like rivers , especially in warmer areas because birds stay longer active there...but  would love to turn off the sound of the river for a while.....

Because I did arrive around 7.50am, the birds were already slower.
But still it was nice to be in that area and see different birds and trees.

27th of August, a few hours time for open field birds...

Today I did go to an area 10 min from our house. It is a field where the owner planned to make a development, it is not going on and the field is now messy, surrounded by dense brushes, scrubs and forest and fantastic for birds...

sneaky birds...

This morning I did go to one of my favorite areas in Boquete on my own to hike and watch some birds(and wildlife) .
It was beautiful weather and no wind.  I did start with a big group of Coati's (counted 8) . Then I did see the three wattled Bell bird, male and an immature male. On the Quetzal trail they are already gone since end of July, but in this area they are still around. Pretty late. I think it has to do due bad weather in Bocas del Toro these last months.
Normally the Bell birds are gone in this time of year is my experience.Later on also a big group of white faced Capuchin Monkeys.
A lot of food around and also nice flowers for the Hummingbirds.

Of course I do like the "sneaky birds"...
The area where I was this morning is great to see White fronted Tapaculo's...still hard to take a picture, but you have to believe me...
Another bird what is always more difficult to see and for sure to take a picture..the white throated Spadebill...

Then another sneaky bird... Chiriqui Quail Dove.

And yes I think a sneaky bird is also the tropical Parula, they have beautiful colors, but still hard to find a lot of times , so high up in the trees ... and they blend in a lot of times.
Any way here is my list of this morning...
black Guans
spotted Wood- Quails
Turkey Vulture
Swallow tailed Kite
black Hawk Eagle
white tipped Dove
Chiriqui Quail Dove
violet Sabrewing
green violet Ear
garden Emerald
white tailed Emerald
white throated Mountain Gem

scintillant Hummingbird
prong billed Barbets
blue throated Toucanet
streak breasted Treehunter
ruddy Woodcreeper
silvery fronted Tapaculo
Mountain Elaenia
white throated Spadebill
yellowish Flycatcher
tropical Kingbird
three wattled Bellbird
brown capped Vireo
House Wren
black faced Solitair
ruddy capped nightingale Thrush
Mountain Thrush
tropical Mockingbird
tropical parula
collared Redstart
slate throated Redstart
three striped Warbler
rosy Thrush Tanager
white naped brush Finch
chestnut capped brush Finch
rufous collared Sparrow
flame colored Tanager
white winged Tanager
elegant Euphonia
golden browed Chlorophonia (loads!)
and I love this tree....

And at 1pm when I had my lunch at home , this smart rufous tailed Hummingbird is (always) hiding for the rain on our terrace

red fronted Parrotlets and a Chiriqui Quail Dove... Quetzal trail 16th of August 2014

I was for a short moment on the sendero los Quetzales today at the Boquete side(alto Chiquero) (9 am) and did see a flock of 8 red fronted Parrotlets.
No picture...my day starts good.
After that doing stuff at home I drove to the other side(1,5 hour drive) of the Quetzal trail to pick up Hans (Husband) who was hiking the trail with a Dutch Family. He came out around 4.30pm and so I had time to look around.
It was nice weather and of course I had my binoculars with me. Started with a nice rufous collared Sparrow, always cute.

Found a nice little wild trail.. sit there silent without movement and did wait for one hour...a beautiful magnificent Hummingbird was taking a bath in front of my face..he did show all the colors... a large footed Finch took a bath and also a yellowish Flycatcher.
Then a flock of prong billed Barbets, collared Redstarts, black cheeked Warblers, sooty capped bush Tanagers, a nice flame throated Warbler and a stripe tailed Hummingbird passed by.
And then suddenly in front of my face a nice Chiriqui Quail Dove...I did take in slow motion in my hands....he did see the movement...so I have his back...

Fortunately I did checked him out very well with my binocs before I took the picture.
Such a beauty.
And so he did disappear in the bushes as silent as he did appear.

I did sneaked in another small trail and that ended up in a nice valley
and a male Quetzal was flying over and I said hello to him.
Love to wait for my Husband!

Oh and today was the official opening of the sendero los Quetzales. After 5 years closed.
 More signs better trails.

day off, birding morning on our other farm

We have another farm in the mountains of Boquete, beautiful area. It was all pasture , but we let this 27 hectare alone for almost 18 years. A lot of farmers are thinking that  we are crazy.
There are now a lot of Oak trees back and there are a lot of animals and birds. They can hide very good, totally fantastic for me ...I love to look for the birds in dense area's ..I love surprises. So I did wait and was quiet and enjoyed myself very much.
