3 thick billed Euphonia's flew out(17th of July 2015).. small lines did save them

A week ago we did hear the parents of 3 immature thick billed Euphonias (in the nest in a hanging basket in front of our little Tinamou cottage) making alarm calls.
I did run outside and a raod side Hawk was sitting on the nest and planning to get the 3 chicks!
He flew away without the little ones and they were o.k.
He was the whole morning around the nest.
We cannot be guards all the time... so we thought about a friend here in Boquete. He has a pont with fish and an Osprey was fishing all the time. Our friend put some lines over the pont and yes the Osprey gave up.
Well we decided to do the same. And yes it worked!!!
They all flew out healthy after a week (17th of July) yes!
Everyone happy! except the road side Hawk of course.

bird trip 19th of July 2015

Yes it is almost the end of July, the birds are hiding more a lot of juvenile birds and adults are changing their feathers.
We have to put more effort to see the birds . This morning we did have great weather , but we did need more patience then ever. Still in the two areas we did visit, we did see quit good birds.
The highlight  was the big group of sulpur winged Parakeets that did land in a tree in front of us...yes!

this morning 18th of July 2015 in the cloudforest, my bird of the day.. ornate Hawk Eagle (Juvenile)

I did not know where to go this morning, the weather was fine all over the areas around us...only towards Bocas del Toro was no option, a lot of clouds.
I decided  to go to the cloud forest.
A nice area where I did see and hear  the Ornate Hawk Eagle and yes my goal was suddenly to see him better and even try to take a picture. Last time I did see an adult flying over, that was exciting.
I know they had a nest with an immature... ( http://terryboquetebirdstory.blogspot.com/2015/02/11th-of-februarycloudforest-1750-mthe.html )
With my "lucky"birding socks...
on and my dog Spot , who really decided to go with me...I could not get him out of my car...
I was on my way.
7am I was in the nature, no bright sun (fortunately), no wind... great weather.
On my way I did see  nice birds and entering the forest I did hear the Hawk sounds...I look around  and there he was a nice juvenile ornate Hawk Eagle...yeah! And yes I took pictures!

Goal reached! But of course more other birds!!
A lot of Three wattled Bellbirds..on the picture is a Juvenile and another bird on the left of him..a Mountain Thrush
And I took the picture of a nice dark Pewee...

Lovely morning! around noon Spot and I stepped into our car, before that, I did show the pictures to two man who work on the property(mainly coffee farm and a lot of protected cloud forest), they did see the Hawk Eagle before and they never did see him so good as on my picture, they were impressed, glad I could show them my pictures and movies...
Spot is getting a real good birding dog, he is patient and some birds or animals he points out , but he will stay with me. Great!and cosy.
He was thirsty so we did share my water, did not have a bowl, so this works too....

Did see some Squirrels, thanks to Spot and a Sloth..
The birdlist of this morning and 2 small movies from of course the Juvy Ornated Hawk Eagle, here is the link:

birding in David and on our farm today 11th of July 2015 and a lifer for me...crested Bobwhite

Hans and I were up pretty early, we have guests in the cottages and so early breakfast for the nature lover guests and we had to do grocery shopping in David, so why not combine that with some lowland birds...yes!
Still we were in David area, direction Pacific coast at 8.30 pm..normally pretty late, but it was cloudy , so the birds were still pretty active.
Around 10am it started to be hotter..it was 31 degrees  Celcius when we stepped into the car.
Time for airco for us "mountain people".
A lot of different Seedeaters and pale vented Pigeons and great tailed Grackles, for them heaven because of the rice fields and fresh soil. (on picture an immature variable Seedeater)

On the river of course a nice Amazon Kingfisher:

A beautiful  fast streaming jungle river...the name: rio Chico

In a tree a common black Hawk making his call:(a nice black bellied whistling Duck flew by(on the left:)

Quit a bit of different Parrots and Parakeets flew by...
these loud Parrots are yellow crowned Parrots:
nice Butterfly:

On our way to David , from Boquete..two Quails crossed over, probably immature. Unfortunately
I could not make a picture, we were driving. But I did see them very good!
2 crested Bobwhites..fantastic and they crossed safe over and walked into the tall grass along the road.
And almost home along the Wilson's bridge every day the Bat falcon is sitting there...

In the afternoon I hiked the trails in our forest before the rain started, good birds.
A couple of white winged Tanagers are making a nest high in a tree.

afternoon birding

Around 2pm here on the farm it started to be cloudy and rainy after a beautiful sunny morning.
I did decide to go to a river where it was better bird weather, I was ready to see some river birds.
Around Caldera ,  from here 20 minutes away, it was Sunny and some clouds and not so hot when I did arrive around 2.30pm..my first river (rio los Valles)
...and bingo right away a nice Amazon Kingfisher.

Some nice neotropic cormorants landed in front of my face and so I was happy.. next to some other birds to see , I was in my element , mission complete!

After a half an hour on my way to the next river , Chirqui nuevo.
And yes there was the Ringed Kingfisher waiting for me...
a Nice male and in no time a female ringed Kingfisher flew over.

After 3 hours I did go home , where the late afternoon sun peeped through the clouds, what a nice way to spend an afternoon!
