Migration time...my best picture so far of a migration bird
13th of October 2020
October is bird migration time... my days are too short, every morning I am awake at 5.45ish , 6am it is getting light and have my breakfast on the balcony. Calls of migration birds...I love it and also "our" birds are pretty active because of all the travelers around them... they are defending their area.
I try to take pictures, but because I am so busy with ID's, I am most of the time too late to get a good picture. This Swainson's Thrush was probably so tired after a night flying, that I finally got a nice picture of this nice bird. My lists of the birds are on E-bird.
I did got some e mails with questions...how everything is going... looking to Covid virus situation. Well we are okay, stay in our bubble and doing jobs in the farm and around the cottages and house. Panama is opening a bit, but they are careful, what is for many people hard ...but in this country health of the people is number 1... which is a good thing. So plenty of time to watch birds and that is a good way to relax .
Hope that all of my blog readers stay healthy and safe! And here is my "winner picture"!

Summer Tanager female
Good morning ...this 26th of September 2020, and yes there she was.... the female Summer Tanager, eating like crazy .. while I was eaten by mosquitos I took this video. I did see 3 Summer Tanagers all females this morning and more migrants... a nice male Canada Warbler, black and white Warblers, American Restarts, blackburnian Warblers, northern Waterthrush, western/eastern Wood Pewees and yesterday by the way the first Tennessee Warbler and a Louisiana Waterthrush, oh yes the video is on this blog of him/her. The highlight for me this morning were 2 eastern Wood Pewees fighting for their territory .. after that one started to sing...very sweet song...I did try to tape it , but it was short... hope it is on the tape...beautiful!
My bird lists are on E-bird.

green fronted Lancebill 1750 m Altitude cloud forest Boquete Panama
Hello everybody, yes before we have the weekend in quarantaine I did go to the cloud forest to check out the birds there. I did do a lot of birdwatching this week, checking out what happens with the migrants. Two days ago it was really nice on our farm, a lot of migrants... the winners were blackburnian Warblers. Today I did see only one male and next to that a black and white Warbler and three western/eastern Wood Pewees and northern Waterthrushand more of "our" birds. I was happy this week to see migrant Warblers, so much bad news about migrant birds in the news... I will keep my eyes and ears open.
Today it was beautiful sunny weather in the morning and pretty "cold" the first hour, I started later, because birds are always later active higher up in the mountains. Started around 8.30am.
In the beginning of the trail there were two man, one police and one from the "Miambiente" (environment ministry) I did read two days ago in the newspaper that the national parks get more protection, by putting more police to guard..to avoid that people are going to do hunting, cutting trees away...that kind of things. So we did talk and they were both my kind of man, totally in the nature..enthusiastic and also frustrated by what they experience. But I said to them, you can do something about it for real... we did talk about bird /nature protection, growing coffee on high altitudes(a hype now...also because of the climate change and money). And illegal dumping chemicals into rivers, what was in the news yesterday in an area nearby Cerro Punta. They told me that they were going into the area to check what is happening... they did have a tip that there was illegal cutting of trees in Parque La Amistad, so they were on a mission and they are coming back in 2,5 days. Later I was on the trail and they passed me... with another man from Miambiente and 5 Policeman.
My morning was already a success after this good conversation!!! I must say that Panama is really busy to protect the areas, it always can better of course, always there are "bad people". Anyway, as usual I did not walk a lot, did watch for half an hour two green fronted Lancebill Hummingbirds going with the large bills into flowers.
It was a good morning!

a release of a female resplendent Quetzal ( in English and Español )
Hello everyone, finally another post .. despite the virus and quarantine I am quite busy with everything. Our life looks different, we suddenly have more time to maintain our own home and garden. I often sit on the terrace and watch the birds or walk in the farm here. Once a week I go to another quiet "no people" area where I enjoy the birds for a while. Shopping as little as possible and very early in the morning. This is how we pass the time ...
Last Tuesday (8 Sept 2020) I received a message from Rosie who takes care of birds and has an official permit from "Miambiente", Ministry of Environment. People from the ministry had brought a Quetzal (female) to her that Friday (Sept. 4). She had been dumped in the Volcan area. People had probably taken her out of the nest and cut her wings. Probably dumped ... now my interpretation ... because it is a protected bird species and is punishable anyway !!!!! what they did ... whether it turned out to be a female and well they are of course less beautiful than the male ... in any case ... a very wrong situation.
Rosie has so far rescued Toucans and parrots and Howler Monkeys ... and returned many to nature. But never a Quetzal of course. Quetzales need special food
... they mainly eat wild avocados and other fruits of the Laurel family. For the first time in ages, I went to visit to check the situation. Keeping our distance and wearing a mask, we looked at a bird that was reasonably well feathered, she could fly and she ate by herself ... but in a cage at 600 m altitude in the heat,
she would not last long ... release as soon as possible! luckily we agreed there. I had an idea where there was fruit and went to investigate. Found a place. Unfortunately was the release not the next day, because people from "Miambiente" had to come along and also give permission.(which is super good!) That permission was there. And this morning (Thursday) the time had come. In the morning that day before, I also went to have a look and on both days I did see the fruit and also many birds. .. also orange bellied Trogons ... that also did give me a good feeling. The site is at 1900 m altitude. Rosie and I (both a bit nervous) and Hans had to walk a bit to get to the spot, as quickly as possible. It is a protected forest of friends and we always call it the silent forest. No people, just birds and trees and plants. The Quetzal was getting livelier, it was really moving to see
... yes this was her place! Immediately after the release
and at the last place she started to polish her feathers. She had eaten well that morning, so she could let everything come to her just as well. Near her there was an orange bellied Trogon and lots of Mountain Thrushes ... so fruit!
We watched for about 15 minutes and yes fingers crossed ... She sat on the branch like a female Quetzal .. quietly looking around brushing feathers ... who knows what she will do, it will be fine ... hope that the wings will grow fast!
Greetings from Terry (hope you do enjoy the videos... I had to zoom in a bit sometimes, but you will get the impression)

tropical screech Owl on finca Habbus de Kwie
18th of June 2020
Hello everybody, good birding times today... suddenly I did see a tropical screech Owl perching...I heard some birds calling, but to be fairly honest I thought that is was because of my dogs...but they were behind me, so then always take the calling serious, so I was checking the forest and yes there he/she was... the "tropical screech Owl"
I must say..I am also proud on this picture that I took from 2 very cute, hungry... just perched red legged Honeycreepers..

black Phoebe just fledged in Boquete Panama
17th of June 2020.. Hans and I did go today for the first time since more than 3 months to the ranger station of the national park volcan Baru ..sendero los Quetzales. Of course the park is still closed, so we did sit on the little bench and did drink coffee. Did see some birds and did enjoy the silence and sun. Then after 20 minutes there was a car and a woman stepped out...so we stepped in the car and drove away. We were not in the mood to sit there and wear mouth protection... So we passed the Caldera river and did watch this cute just fledged black Phoebe, we felt better again and did go to our home on the farm where we did drink coffee ...again.
Difficult times...
Stay safe

Global big day... bird watching with my birding dogs
Hello Everybody!!
Saturday 9th of May 2020... Global big day... my dogs were with me the whole day, they are such a patient dogs!
Today it was all about the amount of different species of birds... on our farm I counted 90 species of different birds...in Panama a lot of birdwatchers counted in total 627 species. A good score because of the lock down in Panama and Saturday was everybody in quarantine. Also a lot of birdwatchers had to count from their balcony in for example Panama city...but still they did it and next year it will be huge! Hope that a lot of newcomers will participate next year!!!
The weather was great, partly clouds ..not too warm, perfect!!!
Hans and I did start midnight 00.00 am the common Potoos were singing , the rufous Nightjar and tropical screech Owl also..those were my first birds. Of course downloading on E-bird and then to bed. At 5.45 am I was awake...breakfast on the balcony and listening to the birds and making a list. It's for E-bird okay to add birds on the list also when you hear them.
The whole day I was busy with my lists, pictures and bird watching in different areas on the farm(I am SO lucky) ..it was a great day! And every time when I was coming home, there was lunch, dinner and coffee ....Hans love to see me enjoying this day and he is taking care of me, so sweet!!! and relaxing.
The highlights bird wise (of course everything :) ) a collared forest Falcon adult flying by in the forest followed by a lot of angry birds. No pictures..it happened too fast!
A very cute just fledged immature of a yellow green Vireo.
I did try to take pictures...down below some best ones:
A yellow olive Flycatcher:
A red eyed Vireo:
A white throated Thrush:
Down below my lists of the global big day.
Stay healthy and safe!!!

April 2020 on the farm in Boquete (Panama)
Hello everybody, yes April 2020..."the
weird lock down corona quarantine April 2020" is coming to an end..up
to.. I hope a less weird May 2020, but probably it will be again a weird
month...but maybe a little bit less uncomfortable feeling...I hope. I
can say that Hans and I are very lucky to live on the farm and can walk
around and enjoy nature...so I thought I make a short video that maybe
you can be a little bit part of our lives here. Unfortunately no guests
and others can enjoy it for real..so sorry for the people who had to
cancel their vacation... fortunately most of them are planning to come
later....
What is happening in April... as most
of you do see, we still see some migrant birds on the farm, coming
through and eating themselves full on berries and insects. Since a few
weeks we do get some rain and that gives insects..also the first leaf
cutter Ants and army Ants are active and of course with the army Ants we
have even more bird activity around the big swarms. See a few of my
bird lists down below . The migration of the birds to the north is
almost done now... we still get big groups of Swainson's Thrushes, this
morning 2 red eyed Vireos and even still a female blackburnian
Warbler... of course everyday calls and sightings of eastern Wood Pewee
and western Wood Pewee. Of course I did not go higher (or lower) in the
mountains to check out what happens there, because of the lock down.

sound of Kinkajous in the night
Hello everybody, last night it was the whole night Kinkajou party on the farm, I counted at least 5. The first calls were new for me in the 21 years that we live here... they were chasing each other, heard the trees going wild...I thought also on that moment..how about the birds who are sleeping...by the way, it is a dark video, so no Kinkajou to see..only to hear.
Greetings from Terry and ...stay safe

March 2020 did start.....
March started, exciting times will come soon , although..bird wise there is always something going on. We are in the second week of March...I must say..did have quit a bit of bird watching trips in different areas, but not too much migrant warblers...where are the big groups of Tennessee Warblers? It seems to get less... Ones in a while I do see a black burnian Warbler or a chestnut sided Warbler...but the big mixed flocks ...I miss them.
The amount of resplendent Quetzales and three wattled Bellbird are overwhelming this season...huge amount of fruit on the trees for them, this will be a good year for them. The weather is a kind of crazy, we had some big showers in our dry season on the farm... so the garden, forest and meadows are green.. I did start with irrigation a few days ago. I am curious how our wet season will be....
Did met really nice birdwatchers. 2 Couples discovered that they were really birdwatchers and are totally hooked... and another couple was already hooked.
A lot of fun with students in the age of 20ish... they loved the cloud forest, always a good feeling that I can show the richness, the beauty.
When I tell about this forest and about the birds that we see and not see but hear, I feel so grateful that I can do this and that I live it!
Good sightings of young three wattled Bellbirds, see above video and down below 2 pictures, they are trying to do displays, it's funny how they sound, like a boy who is getting a heavier puber voice.

sendero los Quetzales hike 28th of February 2020
Normally I wait for Hans and the hikers and mostly I enjoy myself with the birds and a lot of times "singing" indigenous men working on the fields. Except when it rains, then I sit in the car ...sometimes for 3 hours. Well that is part of the deal.
Today it was good weather and Hans did start around 8.45am at the ranger station in Boquete and I started at 7.55am on the other side . ( after 1.5 hours drive)
My hope was to see the silvery throated Jays (around the 2350 m and higher)... when I hike the trail with birders, mostly we are too late to see them or mostly we do the trail for a day, but then the Boquete side. As a birder it is hard to go faster. I did see the Jays, lovely...not a good picture , because they were "angry birds", chasing each other...
It was nice to be on the trail on my own...I realized that we are visiting this trail already 22 years.
Still very beautiful and unspoilt. On the Cerro Punta side more intensive agriculture and sneaky some forest did disappear there..but the trail after Respingo ranger station is still the same.. nobody can touch that..only wind and rain.
I did not have the whole day...maybe next time and it was nice to hike also a bit... was amazed that the three wattled Bellbirds were so deep in the forest.
Everywhere Quetzales, this is the time that they do their displays. Even I did see already a pair making a nest
...it will be a good year for the Quetzales and Bellbirds . A lot of Bambito fruit.
Fortunately Hans and the French hikers did see male Quetzales flying and took some pictures.
They were surprised to see me (they are guest in Tinamou cottage, so I met them already before ) and even more surprised that I had coffee for them and fresh baked Cookies ("speculaas" Dutch cookie).
I moved on ...some mixed flocks, but not a lot. Nice ruddy Treerunner eating a bug
And common Chlorospingus who was showing off for me...
I took some pictures on the trail..that I want to share:
My favorite spot....
Down below my list of this morning.... greetings from Terry

bicolored Hawk immature ( buffy )
Sunday 23 February 2020
Another exciting morning...I was a little bit busy this morning, but I still had time around 10ish to go to the area la India, a part of Boquete. With my birding dog Spot and have a nice time alone in the mountains... it was hot, but mainly I was in the forest and of course I don't walk fast.
I did start with a "national Geografic" moment ...two violet Sabrewings had a nice display..never did see that so beautiful. They flew up high in the sky and dove down very fast together...but high in the blue sky they did a dance.
I did see two white tailed Emerald males fighting with each other, the gorgets of both males were so deep emerald ..it did hurt my eyes :)
A beautiful pair of thick billed Euphonias carrying nest material and two elegant Euphonias a pair, stealing nest material from another nest... I will share that video in a next post.
On my way back I met our neighbour of our other farm, while I was talking with him about serious stuff, I did see a shade of a bigger bird flying over...when I did say goodbye ..I walked along a big tree, some birds were upset ...like the white tailed Emeralds and I thought about the shade... looked up and yes two yellow eyes were staring at me...well you see the video above...
Have a good Sunday, mine cannot go wrong anymore.
Greetings Terry
